MAT118 Mathematical Ideas I

This course is the first in a sequence designed for education majors. It is designed to develop a student’s understanding of the mathematical concepts of numbers and their operations, and the properties of number systems required for elementary school teaching. Topics include number systems, place value and arithmetic models, mental calculations, algorithms, factors and multiples, prime and composite numbers, fractions and decimals, ratio, percentage and rate, elementary number theory, and descriptive statistics. Use of manipulatives and relevant technology may be integrated into the course.

A graphing calculator is required. The instructor will provide more information on the required materials for the course.
