Teaching Methods II: Using Research-Based Practices to Develop Effective Instructional Strategies for CTE (Vocational) Programs examines how students learn and how Career and Technical Education (CTE) educators can apply learning science to improve instruction in classrooms, laboratories, shops, and work-based learning environments.
Students analyze cognition, memory, attention, motivation, identity, belonging, language development, feedback, and technical-skill acquisition to design inclusive, engaging instruction for diverse learners. Through authentic CTE applications, students develop instructional units and performance-based assessment systems that integrate academic knowledge, industry practices, workplace problem-solving, and opportunities for students to build independence and transfer learning. Students also use instructional evidence, collaboration, family and community context, and reflection on educator identity to evaluate and continuously improve their professional practice.
This course fulfills one of the DESE-approved coursework requirements addressing the Professional Standards for Vocational Technical Teachers (603 CMR 4.10) for candidates pursuing a Professional Vocational Technical Teacher license.
