EDU211 Teaching Methods I: Educating and Assessing the CTE (Vocational) Learner

This course prepares vocational-technical educators to design, implement, and interpret a comprehensive range of assessment strategies within Chapter 74 career and technical education programs. Candidates examine the purposes and types of assessment: diagnostic, formative, summative, and authentic/performance-based while learning to align assessment practices with Massachusetts Career Vocational Technical Education (CVTE) Frameworks, industry-recognized competency standards, and program-specific technical skill attainment requirements.

Participants develop competency-based assessment tools, including rubrics, criteria for success, and performance assessments that reflect workplace standards, and explore skill growth. The course addresses using assessment data to inform instructional decision-making, differentiate instruction, and support all learners, including students with disabilities and English learners, in meeting program completion and licensure/certification benchmarks. Candidates also examine grading practices and how to report student progress to stakeholders.

This course fulfills one of the DESE-approved coursework requirements addressing the Professional Standards for Vocational Technical Teachers (603 CMR 4.10) for candidates pursuing a Professional Vocational Technical Teacher license.
