MAT118 Mathematical Ideas I

This course is the first in a sequence designed for education majors. It is designed to develop a student’s understanding of the mathematical concepts of numbers and their operations, and the properties of number systems required for elementary school teaching. Topics include place value and arithmetic models, mental math, algorithms, factors and prime numbers, fractions and decimals, ratio, percentage and rate, integers, elementary number theory and descriptive statistics. Use of manipulatives and relevant technology may be integrated into the course. The TI-83, TI-83 Plus, or TI-84 Plus graphing calculator is required.
