Transferring Credits to NECC
The Office of the Registrar will grant transfer credit for equivalent college-level coursework completed at institutions of higher education that are regionally accredited. This transfer credit policy is for courses/credits that do not meet the criteria for the GenEd Foundation Block. Eligible transfer courses must attain a minimum grade of a “C” or better and course content must relate directly to a student's program of study in order to be considered for transferability at NECC. Grades given for transferred courses are awarded as “TR” on the transcript and are not computed in the grade point average (GPA).
Students will be notified by the Registrar’s Office of the transfer credits awarded within three weeks from when official transcript(s) were received. Generally, transfer credits will not exceed 36 credits. A minimum of 24 credits of coursework must be completed at NECC in order to qualify for an associate’s degree and a minimum of 12 credits to qualify for a certificate.
Academic Residency Requirements
There are other ways in which a student may be eligible for transfer credit such as:
- Credit for prior learning
- Credit by examination
- Military experience
- Foreign language skills
- Challenge examinations
For more information, please contact the Academic Placement and Testing Center.
Note: Courses that do not have an equivalency at NECC may be transferred in with the appropriate course prefix followed by the number of credits and the course title that appears on the transcripts from the other institution. This may occur if the course is directly related to a student’s program of study at NECC.
International Transcripts
International transcripts must have been evaluated by an evaluation agency such as CED or WES.
Students who took English at an international institution must take the Accuplacer exam. Transfer credit for ENG101 will only be awarded if students are placed into English Composition I from the Accuplacer test results.
Why didn't a course transfer into NECC?
- You didn't receive a final grade of “C” or higher.
- The course(s) is not equivalent to NECC course(s).
- You received a grade of "P" for passing (unless the transcript defines P as being a “C” or higher, it will not transfer into NECC. You will need to get documentation from the College that the final grade was a “C” or higher).
- The course(s) was taken at a non-accredited College.
- The course did not apply to your Program of Study.
- You are not matriculated (enrolled) in a Program of Study.
Transfer Credit Appeals Process
If a student disagrees with the awarding of transfer credits, the following steps can be taken:
- The Registrar or Academic Advisor refers the student concern to the Director of Transfer, Articulation, and Academic Center Advising who will consult with the appropriate Academic Center Dean.
- If there is no resolution at the Academic Center Dean level, the issue will be referred to the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs for final resolution.
- The Director of Transfer, Articulation, and Academic Center Advising will then inform the student of the final decision.
