EDU102 Introduction to Special Education

This course is designed to explore the nature and needs of special education students in schools (PreK-12) while examining the role of the classroom teacher in understanding a systematic approach to inclusion in planning curriculum and instruction for academically diverse learners. An approach to effective instruction will focus on the classroom factors with emphasis placed on classroom elements that the educator can differentiate or modify to increase student success. Topics include: identification of various disabilities, importance of confidentiality, understanding the Individual Educational Plan (IEP), inclusion strategies and instructional design. Classroom observation experiences are required of all students for a total of 15-hours.

PLEASE NOTE: Since field observations take place in area educational settings, students may be required to complete a criminal background check (CORI/SORI/CHRI).
