Day and evening options
The Associate in Science degree program in Elementary Education is designed for students pursuing a career in the field of education and interested in becoming licensed teachers. This program is designed to provide a strong foundation in arts and sciences through the distribution of required Liberal Arts courses. Specifically designed, the career courses will integrate theory and practice, knowledge of child growth and development, sensitivity to cultural needs and understanding of special education and reading process. Educational course content will focus on the current Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. This program provides students the foundation to further study at a four year college.
A minimum of 62 credit hours are required for graduation.
Starting in the fall of 2014, any student enrolled in an associate degree program who is new to NECC and has no academic history at the college, must take at least one course designated as intensive in each of NECC’s six core academic skills in order to graduate. In most cases, the program’s core required courses include these intensive courses. Plan to see an advisor for more complete information about this graduation requirement.

Students interested in participation in this academic program may be required to undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, a Criminal Records Central Repository (CHRI) check and/or a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) check. Northern Essex Community College is committed to the success of every student. Students with legal issues in their background will meet with a committee as part of the CORI/CHRI/SORI process and will receive guidance and counseling throughout the review of their records. Program Notes
Students in this program should be aware of the professional teacher standards necessary to be successful in a career working with children (i.e. patience, enthusiasm, knowledge, collaboration, concern for others and an understanding of his/her legal and moral responsibilities). Success in this program will require excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Students are expected to have their own means of transportation to and from the field observation sites.
All students (part-time and full-time) must have an updated immunization record on file in order to begin field observation work.
