HUS173 Relapse Prevention

The course will survey evidence-based approaches to relapse prevention in regards to substance use and related disorders. It employs the study of several therapies and models, including, cognitive-behavioral, developmental model, traditional 12-Step, and the use of pharmacotherapy, as well as harm reduction philosophy. Students will learn to use Motivational Interviewing, Motivational Enhancement Therapy, and other valid, reliable measures to treat relapsing clients with attention to the need to display and practice cultural competency, respect for diversity, and observe ethical boundaries as supported by the National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors.
