Math Policy for Newly Matriculated Students

Effective Fall 2016 and Forward

Policy: Effective Fall 2016 forward, all newly matriculated Northern Essex students in an Associate Degree or Certificate program that requires a college level math course will be required to take at least the first college level math course required in their academic major prior to completing 15 college level credits. This policy applies to all the college’s math pathways. Students are required to take and complete a math course that has a number between MAT 100 and MAT 299 within 15 college level credits.

Students who fail to complete the first college level math class required in their academic major prior to completing 15 credits:

  • Will not be allowed to register for courses online until the successful completion (“C” or higher) of such math course. This, in turn, could complicate developing an ideal course schedule.
  • Will be required to either meet in person, via email, or Web Advising with their advisors in order to be advised and registered for courses each semester that the math requirement is not met.
  • Could potentially be delayed for graduation.

Once this math requirement is met, students will be granted access to register and add/drop courses online, if appropriate, based on Associate Degree or Certificate. All students are strongly encouraged to communicate with their assigned advisors, regardless of Online Registration status.

Because academic degree and certificate programs have varying math requirements, there will be some program exceptions to this policy that will continue to be monitored by both faculty and professional advisors and explained to students.

Incentive Policy: Students that successfully complete the first college level math course required in their academic major (i.e. with a grade of C or higher) in their first 15 college level credits at NECC will be eligible for a $100 incentive on their second required college level math course. Students who are in certificate programs, programs that require one college level math course, or programs that have no college level math requirement will not be eligible for this incentive.

To be eligible for this one time only incentive, a student must:
    1. Be in a major that requires at least two college level math courses
    2. Register for and complete, with a grade of “C or better, the first math course (MAT 100-299) relevant to his/her degree
    3. Be enrolled in the second math course relevant to the degree

    A student becomes ineligible if:

    1. He or she drops, withdraws, is dropped by the faculty, or receives an incomplete in the first course at the end of the semester in which the student registered for the first course
    2. Makes a grade lower than a “C” in the first college level math course
