Criminal Justice: Private and Public Safety, Associate in Science (Accelerated)

Courses and Requirements

Click here to go to the Mass Transfer webpageAssociate in Science Degree in Criminal Justice: Private & Public Safety Option (Accelerated) describes and analyzes the various aspects of the criminal justice system. The course curriculum is designed to take a systems approach in understanding the crime problem in the United States. The program is structured for those students with current or prior experience in the criminal justice field and can be completed in 16 months through a 7 ½ week course curriculum path. It is recognized that a majority of criminal justice students continue their education after completing their degree. Consequently, the curriculum has a broad, academic orientation, facilitating transfer to four-year institutions. A minimum of 67 credit hours are required for graduation.

Candidates for the Associate in Science Degree in Criminal Justice: Private & Public Safety Option (Accelerated) must be college ready in math and English and obtain approval from the Criminal Justice Program Coordinator.

Starting in the Fall of 2014, any student enrolled in an associate degree program who is new to NECC and has no academic history at the college, must take at least one course designated as intensive in each of NECC’s six core academic skills in order to graduate. In most cases, the program’s core required courses include these intensive courses. Plan to see an advisor for more complete information about this graduation requirement.

CORI/CHRI/SORI

Students interested in participating in this academic program may be required to undergo a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, a Criminal Records Central Repository (CHRI) check and/or a Sex Offender Record Information (SORI) check. For more information, visit the CORI/CHRI/SORI page on the NECC website.

Northern Essex Community College is committed to the success of every student. Students with legal issues in their background will meet with a committee as part of the CORI/CHRI/SORI process and will receive guidance and counseling throughout the review of their records. NECC personnel make every effort to help students prepare for careers in their chosen field. Students are encouraged to seek assistance and support.
