General Studies and General Studies Individualized Option
General Studies
Effective for spring 2015 and forward, the college will no longer allow new students applying to the college to declare General Studies as a major. Students will be encouraged to apply to the Liberal Arts program and work closely with faculty, or professional advisors to determine a pathway that is suitable for their academic goals. Students in the Liberal Arts program will be guided by faculty advisors through courses that will enable them to complete the Mass Transfer Block, as well as develop a well-rounded foundation in the Liberal Arts areas. Students who declared General Studies as a major prior to spring 2015 will be allowed to graduate from the program, if they choose to do so.
General Studies: Individualized Option
This option will be available effective for spring 2015 and forward for students who transfer in 15 or more college credits, have no interest in any other major, and who would potentially lose credits if Liberal Arts was declared as a major. This option will also be used by advisors to tailor pathways for students who are interested in completing foundation courses for programs not offered at Northern Essex Community College, for example Architectural Design, Exercise Physiology, Mortuary Sciences, Pre-Veterinary, Plant and Soil Sciences, Communication Disorders and others. Students will be required to meet with professional advisors in the Career Planning and Advising Centers in order to matriculate into this program. In an effort to maximize student success and transferability of courses, customized academic plans will be the primary feature of this program.
